ISHE organises an International Congress and a Summer Institute, which take place on alternating years
The next International Congress will be held at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt from 12th to 16th July 2024.
Details will be added here as the conference programme evolves.
Presentation Types
Posters will be presented during the dedicated Poster Session. Poster boards will be in place throughout the conference and you are encouraged to leave the posters in place for the whole duration.
Oral presentations (except the plenary lectures) are 15 minutes talk plus 5 minutes for questions and discussion.
Symposia will be scheduled at suitable times in the programme. Symposia provide the opportunity for a focused session on a key area of research interest in human ethology. Format for symposia is flexible and proposals to be considered by the Program Committee should give details of the proposed topic and format, including Chairperson, proposed speakers (who should have confirmed they are willing to participate), and a proposed schedule (e.g. time allocated to individual talks, whether there will be discussions, panel sessions etc.). As an example, your symposium might have one chair with a 10 min introduction, then four speakers who each have a 20 min slot, and an additional 20 mins scheduled for a panel discussion. Symposia should normally last between one and two hours. Note that for symposia proposals, the proposed Chairperson should submit a proposal for the symposium (i.e. an overview of the entire symposium). Individual speakers who will take part in the symposium should also submit their own abstracts individually.
Guidelines for Abstract Submissions
Abstract proposals can be submitted from the link below. You will need to have ready the following information:
The deadline for abstract submission has now passed, however late submissions may be considered.
After abstract submission
Abstracts will be reviewed by the Programme Committee and the presenting author will be contacted as soon as a decision is made. The Programme Committee reserves the right not to include submitted abstracts in the congress program, or to recommend a change in presentation type (e.g. from oral presentation to poster, or vice versa).
Student First Authors
First author (i.e. presenting) students whose contribution has been accepted as oral or poster paper (including talks in symposia) will be exempted from the registration fee and will be allocated to free (shared) student accommodation and banquet ticket.
This year’s ISHE meeting will take place July 12th – 16th, 2024.

Cal Poly Humboldt was originally founded in 1913 as a teachers’ college and is the northernmost campus of the California State University system. In 2022 it became California’s third polytechnic university in recognition of its longstanding commitment to hands-on applied learning, sustainability, and social justice. Cal Poly Humboldt’s innovative academic programs, life-changing scholarships, and cutting-edge faculty research offer transformational education and experiences in one of the world’s most beautiful natural environments.
The conference will take place in the historic Founders Hall building, with panoramic views of Humboldt Bay to enjoy during the breaks.
The conference banquet will be held at Moonstone Beach House, with time to explore the rocky coast before it gets too dark.
FLYING
Humboldt County Airport (ACV) is located a quick 10-minute drive north of Arcata. ACV is serviced by United Airlines and Avelo. To and from ACV, you can catch a direct flight from multiple locations: San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Burbank (BUR) and Denver (DEN).
Please note that ACV was built during WWII to train pilots to deal with heavy fog. We get lots of fog here! This means that flights in/out of ACV can often be delayed. Fortunately July is usually a pretty safe time to fly. But, if you are booking a flight to one of the major connecting hubs (SFO/LAX/DEN) on another airline we recommend you ensure you have a longer layover on your return flight in case there are any delays getting out of ACV when you leave.
For more information, check out Fly ACV.
DRIVING
From San Francisco (SFO): Hop on Highway 101 and head north. After about 5 hours of wine country, farms, and redwoods, you’ll reach Arcata. The Avenue of Giants is one of the world’s most scenic drives – it’s a “must see” if you’re driving up from San Francisco. The Avenue parallels the highway so you won’t have to stray off course to take advantage of this mandatory detour of 30+ miles engulfed by ancient redwoods. There are many stoping points along the way allowing you to get out into the trees easily. We also recommend the Shrine Drive Thru Tree experience! If you want an even more scenic route and have time to spare, consider taking Highway 1 for one of California’s most beautiful costal drives.
From Sacramento (SMF): Drive up I-5, then to Highway 299, winding along the Trinity River until you reach the coast and Highway 101 South. It’s about a 5.5 hour drive.
From Oregon (PDX): if you’re on the coast, take 101 South until you reach Eureka. If you’re coming from Portland, take I-5 to Highway 199 until you reach 101. Continue south. It’s about a 7 hour drive from Portland.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
The only public transportation option between San Francisco airport (SFO) and Arcata is the Greyhound Bus service. Roundtrip tickets start at $54, but are likely to cost closer to $80. The bus journey takes about 7.5 hours. Onboard services available on Greyhound buses from San Francisco to Arcata include free Wi-Fi for all passengers, personal power outlets near every seat, reclining leather seats with footrests, extra legroom, overhead storage, and an on-board restroom.
GETTING AROUND HUMBOLDT
Once you are in Arcata, everything is accessible by foot. There also bike rental stations around town and a local bus route. A 15-minute drive/bus ride south will put you in Eureka. Old town Eureka offers a quaint seaside walk with many local stores and restaurants. If you are considering renting a car in the area, you are encouraged to make a reservation ahead of your arrival, as the rental agencies don’t keep very many cars on hand locally.
Accommodation will be provided via on-campus housing for conference attendees. Rooms will be provided in the Canyon Housing complex, which backs right onto the Arcata Community Forest, meaning you’ll have access to over 250 miles of trails (trail map) right outside your door! Accommodations are provided for the nights of 7/12-7/16, but early arrivals and late checkouts may be able to be accommodated. **bed linens and towels provided**
Aside from the small Hotel Arcata (15% discount for Cal Poly bookings…be sure you say you’re with us!), there are no hotels within walking distance of the University. Conference attendees are strongly encouraged to stay in the on-campus housing. If, however, you would like to make other arrangements please feel free to contact the local organizing team for advice about where to stay.
This section is a work in progress. Please check back for additional information and updates on the following as the conference approaches!
The International Society for Human Ethology (ISHE) holds annual meetings to enable its membership to present and discuss research findings, to share knowledge of techniques and skills, and to build professional networks. At both its Congress and Summer Institutes, ISHE is dedicated to providing a harassment-free event experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Event participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled without a refund at the discretion of the ISHE Board of Officers.
ISHE is dedicated to diversity, equity, inclusion, and the free expression of ideas. The Society seeks to provide an environment in which diverse participants may learn, network, and enjoy the company of colleagues in an environment of mutual human respect. We recognize a shared responsibility to create and hold that environment for the benefit of all.
Some behaviours, therefore, are specifically prohibited:
• Harassment or intimidation, including but not limited to that based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, age, appearance, religion, or other group status.
• Sexual harassment or intimidation, including stalking (physical or virtual) and recurring unwelcome sexual attention or physical contact.
• Sustained disruption or threatening presenters (verbally or physically).
All participants are asked to frame discussions as openly and inclusively as possible and to be aware of how language or images may be perceived by others.
Critical examination of beliefs and viewpoints does not, by itself, constitute hostile conduct or harassment. Similarly, use of sexual imagery or language in the context of a professional discussion might not constitute hostile conduct or harassment if it is necessary to the topic of discussion and presented respectfully.
Enforcement
Participants who are asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the meeting with no refund.
Event organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.
We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related social activities.
Reporting
If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, or if you believe a harassment problem exists, please report it as soon as possible to any member of the ISHE Board of Officers or event organizers.
