Submit a manuscript via the portal!

Human Ethology accepts original empirical or theoretical articles as well as commentary on original articles and book reviews. You will have to choose during the submission process, which type of manuscript you are submitting. For specific instructions about the different submission types please see below.

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the online submission portal at Human Ethology.

The journal subscribes to the core principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)

Submissions to Human Ethology are double-blind peer reviewed and reviewers are asked to return their reports within 30 days.

Disputes, complaints and allegations of misconduct are dealt with by the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the Board of Officers and Board of Trustees of the International Society for Human Ethology where appropriate.

Ethics

Human Ethology is committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity in publication standards in the articles it publishes.

To this end manuscripts submitted for publication in Human Ethology must now state at the end of the methods section or after the discussion, before the reference section, that the relevant Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board have provided approval for the studies described, giving the full name and affiliation of the review committee and the approval number if available. In cases where no such committee exists authors must declare that their experimental studies were conducted in accordance with the 1964 Helsinki declaration and later amendments or comparable ethical standards.

Disclosures

From Volume 37 (2022) onwards, authors are required to provide the information requested in the Transparency, Authorship and Declaration sections below, and to declare any grant or specific funding for the studies they are presenting, as well as any conflicts of interests.

If no specific funding has been received authors should state that “This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors”.

If no conflict(s) of interest exist(s) the following statement should be used, “The Author(s) declare(s) that there is no conflict of interest”.

These declarations should be included at the end of the discussion section and before the references.

Transparency

There should also be a statement about data availability which should read “The data set analysed and presented in the current study are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request”. If these data are held in a repository details should be given

If the data set(s) are not publicly available this should be outlined in the covering letter to the Editor

Authorship

The manuscript should name as authors all those who have made a significant contribution to any aspect of producing the manuscript, from inception through to completion. All those named as authors are assumed to have approved submission of the manuscript prior to it being submitted. Further information about transparency in authors’ contributions and responsibilities can be found in McNutt et al (2018) linked here

Declaration

When submitting a manuscript to Human Ethology authors are declaring that their work is original and their own, that all authors have seen the manuscript and approved its submission and that it has not been submitted for consideration elsewhere whilst it is under consideration by Human Ethology.
